Acupressure & Marma Point Therapy

Acupressure Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Acupressure is a method of activating the body’s self-healing mechanism to improve health and alleviate pain. It is an ancient practice that shares the same framework with acupuncture - without the intimidating needles. Both function on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine - the smooth flow of life force energy (Qi) through the 14 energy-carrying channels (meridians) is essential for health. In principle, by stimulating pressure points along these channels where Qi can stagnate, wellbeing can be restored. When Qi is strong, it currents through the body to fill us with life and vitality.

The ancient concept of a bio-electromagnetic ‘energetic body’ may be understood from a modern scientific viewpoint in terms of biophotons (electromagnetic waves of light). Current scientists have explored the existence of the meridian system and discovered a potential physical component - the “primo-vascular system” (PVS) (a crucial part of the cardiovascular system) which displays bioelectrical activity and excitatory conductivity. Studies suggest that this circulatory system is involved in channelling the flow of energy and information relayed by biophotons (particles of light generated within the body) and DNA. Meridian lines were found to not be confined to the skin, instead existing as a definitive duct system where “primo” fluid flows - the same liquid that accumulates to form stem cells. These tubular structures exist in and out of blood and lymphatic vessels as well as on the surface of internal organs, throughout fascia, and under the dermis.

These tubular structures exist in and out of blood and lymphatic vessels as well as on the surface of internal organs, throughout fascia, and under the dermis.

The PVS’s connection to fascia is of specific interest. Fascia is connective tissue that surrounds and connects every muscle and organ, assists in fluid flow, and is thought to be intimately involved with the nourishment of cells (including those of disease and cancer). Fascia is mainly made up of collagen – an abundant molecule with possible semiconductive properties that can interfere with photon-emitting processes. This indicates that collagen may help electromagnetic signals to be sent far and wide throughout the body at high speed from the location of signal to the responding organ.

If life force energy is electromagnetic in nature made up of biophotons, then the PVS as a channel for photon emission may come close to explaining the ancient meridian theory of TCM from a modern scientific viewpoint. Studies reveal that regions rich in connective tissue also align with the distribution of meridians and acupoints, thus inflammation in fasciae may also constitute for the disruption of meridian energy flow in TCM. SAGE Quintessence looks forward to a possible future that merges ancient and modern science and will always try and keep you informed (Full Reference list below).

This multi-circulatory system for subtle energy has long been understood by our ancient ancestors – whether called “meridians”, “vessels”, “channels” or “nadis”. Treatment of an individual’s energy field was the preferred healing modality and approached holistically – focusing on the five elements of nature, diet, herbs, meditation, rhythmic movement, breathing and bodywork to tune the self and come back into balance. According to TCM, there are hundreds of acupoints found along the body’s meridians. Performing acupressure at home is made comfortably easy with our sturdy hardwood combs. We have compiled some TCM acupoints for you to explore…

Ayurvedic Marma Point Therapy

Ancient classical Indian scriptures show that marmas have existed since the Vedic age. During this era, ancient sages perceived the laws of nature within their own consciousness in the silence of meditation. They described the silent intelligence of nature as “Veda” – the universal source of all order of nature and life itself. Marmas are vital points in the body where vital life force energy (Prana) is converted, regulated, and stored for use by the body and mind. Prana receives its energy from the sun, air, and earth. By harnessing pranic flow, we correct and redirect its power to heal with and through it. Marma Point Therapy, an effective therapeutic modality like acupressure in TCM, detoxifies, strengthens, and revitalizes the mind and body. Prana circulates through all Nadis – subtle energy channels in the body - the equivalent to meridians in TCM. In Ayurvedic medicine, health is viewed as an expression of harmony reflecting proper functioning of the Nadis. Marmas, as the power centres of the body, represent anatomical sites where muscles, veins, ligaments, bones, and joints meet. There are around 108 marma key energy points and many align with TCM acupoints. We have compiled various marmas for you to explore…
